Bowen - East Australia
Gap Year Travel Journal

(14th - 15th April) Bowen - The land of surprises!
We were aiming for Airlie Beach this night but were too tired after a long drive so stopped off at Bowen about 100km north. We chose a campsite on Queens Bay and although our pitch wasn't beach front, you can see from the photo where Jo is sat outside Priscilla eating her brekkie that we had a pretty good view from our pitch. We walked through the campsite and found a perfect spot to watch the sunset across the beach (see photo with the benches looking out to sea – the sun set to the left of us). Quite rare to find a spot to do this on the East Coast but because this beach is out on a peninsula of land we were facing north so could see it perfectly. What a find - a real secret hideaway spot that doesn't even get a mention in the traveller's bible “Lonely Planet” at all! As you can see from the photos there are loads of beautiful beaches in Bowen all with nice grassy picnic areas as well if getting sand in your toes isn't your thing, and guess what - the sun finaly came out, hooray! What a relief! We actually spent a couple of hours on Horseshoe Beach sunbaking - our batteries felt recharged! The aerial view was taken from the lookout point which gave fantastic 360 degree views over the area. There is a kitesurfing and wind surfing community here too, Mike was getting a bit twitchy, but wasn't really enough to make it worth while for him to go out during our visit.
