(18th March) Cape Naturaliste
We were now heading around the final upward sweep of horseshoe shaped Geographe Bay and passed through the small town of Dunsborough onto Cape Naturaliste. The coast gets more rugged here – like Cornwall. Meelup Beach had grass down to the beach and plenty of shade from trees (this is the picture with the real turquoise sea). There were lots of people here so we continued round to the next bay – Point Piquet. The view from the road along the coast stopped us in our tracks so we parked up and headed down to the beach to find it deserted! We stopped for lunch and then went in for a snorkel. Mike says this is the clearest water he has ever been in, like a swimming pool. There isn’t any coral here but a patch of rocks and orange floaty weed provided a haven for some fish. We saw big shoals of little silver fish plus a small shoal of brown stripy fish. Jo caught sight of a big salmon while Mike saw black and white stripeys and some jelly fish. We continued on around the westernmost point of the cape stopping off at several gorgeous beaches on the way. The weather was closing in a storm was threatening so we headed to Yallingup (means “place of love” as it used to be an Aboriginal honeymoon destination - ahhhh!). This coast is a big mecca for surfers and they get some huge waves here. No town to speak of – just a shop but the views from our campsite were awesome. Looking down from the clifftop along a very Cornish looking beach. The storm did come in that night but the next day was clear so we strolled along the beach and watched the deep green coloured glassy waves rolling in (see Mike’s 3 arty photos of waves).
