(6th April) Coffs Harbour & Dorrigo
Coffs Harbour is a short drive south of Woolgoolga and is a much bigger town. The main retail area is inland while there is a marina and beaches slightly out of town. We had coffee with views over the marina and the main surfing beach and then walked out around the marina wall towards Muttonbird Island and could look back across the more sheltered Jetty Beach. We visited the Botanic Gardens and you can see photos here of Jo on a red bridge over a lily pad covered lake and also beneath an arbor with the most amazing flowers dangling down – orchids we think. We had long leisurely lunch in a restaurant overlooking a creek where we watched canoeists pottering up and down and fed bread over the terrace to the huge shoal of fish below us. Also shown here is a photo of the waterfalls at Dorrigo. We drove up into the hinterland behind Coffs Harbour right up to Dorrigo at the top of the tree covered mountains. A very lush green region with big rivers. We had our picnic lunch at the top of Dangar Falls and walked down to the bottom too to see them up closer. We also visited Dorrigo National Park where we found the Rainforest Centre. We walked out onto a wooden structure called the Skywalk high above the rainforest and were rewarded by sweeping panoramas out to the coast across mountains and trees.
