(19th - 20th March) Margaret River - Town & Campsite
The photo of the river shows the Margaret River surrounded by lush greenery – we’re not quite used to seeing such lush surroundings having been up in the dry north for so long! The main street is tree lined and consists of a row of mostly tourist and surf shops along the Bussell Highway, apart from this it is a simple, functional town that is not particularly noteworthy . We checked into a campsite that is on the river’s edge because we read that you could take their kayaks down the river. But when we got there the river level was so low that it looked like brown sludge! Decided not to bother. The upside of this though was that there were loads of ducks about and in the evening they trod an obviously well worn route up from the river to the caravan pitches in search of food. As you can see from the photos they were very friendly. Jo had scratches all over her legs where one duck kept standing on her lap. We were a big hit with them as we fed them most of our bread supply and we even provided water for them which they loved. We also saw two kookaburras here and could hear them laughing in the trees for ages at sunset – they sound like monkeys!
