(22nd June- 10th August) Maui - Mike having a ball!
Mike was in his element in Maui, he came here to windsurf and wow did he windsurf! It was windy every single day bar none, 4 - 5m winds and wave size ranging between 3 - 8ft on the outer reef at Kanaha Beach Park, about a mile or so out to sea: this part of the reef is called "Uppers". A lot of the pros sail here rather than Hookipa in the summer because the wind is more consistent and the waves are as big. The last few days Mike was completely buzzing, the swell increased to the 6 - 8ft range and the wind shifted slightly more cross shore, he's been consistently getting 4 - 6 bottom turns down the line at Uppers. The other day he was sharing the waves here with Kevin Pritchard, and he's the world champion, so it must be good! The waves at Sprecks a few beaches up the coast are generally a couple of feet smaller and are not so rideable, better for practicing your nifty jumps, most of the euros seem to hang out here. The grassy pictures are of Kanaha beach park, far more civilised than Sprecks if you want the whole package, you actually get grass to rig on, there are plently of toilets, fresh water showers and shade under the trees if you are getting a bit too hot. Sprecks only has the shady trees! Jo really liked Kanaha too, some stretches of the beach are nicely shielded from the constant strong winds, which was great because it meant she could happily top up her tan without getting completely sandblasted!
