Round The World Trip Journal

(22nd June - 10th August) Maui, Hawaii - North Shore
The north shore has all the windsurfing beaches, the capital town of Kahului and the port where the big container ships and passenger cruise ships come in and out. This is where we spent most of our time and did most of our shopping. Kahului has the supermarkets (Safeways) and shopping malls and loads of surf shops. We went mostly to Kanaha Beach Park and Sprecklesville (Sprecks) beach. The north coast is very untouristy and natural. We visited the Iao Valley on the eastern side of the West Maui Mountains (which I can see from my sun lounger every day!). The drive into the mountains was so perfectly lit up by the morning sun that it really brought the lush mountains to life. This is one of the best views on the island. Up at the end of the valley we came to a Botanical Gardens with a stream bubbling down through them. This used to be a really sacred place for the Hawaiians but ironically was also the site of their bloodiest battle too. We climbed up to a lookout to view the valley down to the sea with the Iao Needle (a big pointy rock) to one side.
