(8th March) Perth Zoo
You’d never know that we love our wildlife would you? We couldn’t resist the zoo – as much as we hate to see animals caged up sometimes it’s the only opportunity you have to see these animals. We spent most of our time in the Asian Rainforest section. They have a walk-through Lemur cage where they have 2 ring-tailed lemurs (like in the film Madagascar! Sing along now - “I like to move it move it”). They were trying to sleep on a food table when we went in and they just sat there and let us get right up close and take loads of photos. When they walk they hold their tails bolt upright in the air! Mike loves the tamarins – especially the cotton-topped (with white punky hairpieces ) and emperor (with white long moustaches). The orang-utans were real stars as usual. The one in the picture had dunked his blanket in water and kept it over his head most of the time to ward off the excessive heat. He kept throwing himself down on the ground and humphing around – he looked like a grumpy old man. We were in stitches. They were also eating ice cubes to stay cool in the heatwave. Saw Tasmanian Devils for the first time – like little black pigs which make weird grunting and shrieking noises. And finally we found the meerkats – adorable little creatures that sit up and keep lookout.
