Round The World Trip Journal

(5th & 8th April) Port Douglas
Jo had remembered camping right on Four Mile Beach and walking through a few palm trees to the sand but we couldn’t find the campsite! It must have been turned into one of the big glossy resorts they have here now. We did, however, find a campsite that was only a 2 minute stroll to the beach and the same into the town so we were happy - and as you can see Jo has a loverly bunch of coconuts! The two photos of us with coconuts and the other photo of the beach with weed on it is Four Mile Beach. The aerial view is also looking down over Four Mile Beach. All the other shots are taken from Anzac Park to the north of the town, looking north up towards Cape Tribulation. You can see the lush green mountains in the background. Port is a bustling little touristy town – it has one main road with the shops all crowded in and it has lots of trendy bars and eateries – there’s obviously a lot of money about here and tourism is big business. They have a lovely marina from which the boats depart for reef tours too. Unfortunately, because we are having so much rain, the run off from the land into the sea causes the sea to look cloudy brown/grey not the azure blue you would expect. This, along with the strong winds we have been having, means that we have decided not to go out and snorkel on the reef yet. We hope to be able to farther down the coast. As we were driving along one day we spotted lots of black objects up high in the trees – they are fruit bats – or more precisely – spectacled flying foxes! We stopped to look at them and couldn’t believe the noise they make. It sounds like a mixture between a child crying and a pig squealing with some hoots in the middle and there were hundreds of them all fighting and squabbling with each other. It’s a peculiar experience! If you click on the photo to enlarge it you’ll actually see their golden spectacles. We reckon they look like cute teddy bears in vampire suits!
