(12th - 25th May) Sydney By Night
Sydney takes on a whole new character by night and we certainly made the most of it since we had spent most of the past 4 months on campsites at night in the middle of nowhere! We were like teenagers let loose. Plenty of dining and drinking. We went to an ice bar called Minus 5 where everything inside (the bar, the chairs, the tables, the statues and the glass you drink out of) are made of ice! We were kitted out in ugg boots, parkas, gloves and Russian hats and sent inside with a timer that buzzed when we had to leave after half an hour. We had a vodka cocktail in our ice glass and laughed at each other’s get-up, especially since no-one else was wearing the Russian hats – they must have thought we simple Brits would be game for a laugh! The main highlight by night for Jo was to get to see “Priscilla Queen of the Desert – The Musical”. Her all-time favourite film and we got to see it in Sydney – the start of the original Priscilla the bus’s trek across Australia to Alice Springs. It was so well done: the three main male actors were so like those in the film, except that Felicia did not have the body of Guy Pearce (all Jo’s girlfriends will know what she means – think of those white boxer shorts girls!). The show was so hilarious, we didn’t stop laughing and the costumes were just like in the film too. As a complete contrast to this, we spent an evening at the opera at the Opera House. For the opera buffs among you, we saw (or should that be heard?) a selection of Rossini operatic movements followed by a complete rendition of Stabat Mater. The Opera House is as stunning and dramatic inside as it is outside and we spent most of the performance looking round at the concert hall itself and the huge organ that is built into the back wall. During the interval we stood drinking champagne while looking across the harbour at the bridge – and pinching ourselves to make sure it was all really happening! Our first opera visit and what a place to do it! We spent several evenings at Darling Harbour – one really nice night with Mike’s cousin Steve and his girlfriend Kim – and various other nights bar-crawling around the Harbourside and Cockle Bay Wharf areas (witnessed by the drunken photos of us two!).
