(28th February) Yanchep National Park
Today was Jo’s 41st birthday. Mike had brought out a little collection of cards from the family back home and she got quite homesick and teary for a little while – thanks everyone for all your best wishes, cards and e-mails. To celebrate there was only one thing Jo wanted to do and that was to see Koalas at last! We headed further south to Yanchep National Park that is a little north of Perth. They have a boardwalk running through the koala enclosure here where they have a dozen koalas. Two were in quarantine as they have tiny babies but we saw the other 10. They hide up in the trees and you have to spot the little furry bottoms. Jo is obsessed with them and we spent ages just watching them do nothing really except sleep, eat and look really cute. Unfortunately we couldn’t get up close and personal here though so her quest to hold one continues. We also saw kangaroos in the park and we loved the huge guy in the photo above – he looks like a cool dude laid out leaning on his elbow. The mother in the other photo has a joey alongside her. The park has a huge lake called Lake McNess and is surrounded by all sorts of birds – we’re becoming twitchers there’s no doubt about it! Purple swamp hens, spoonbills, ducks amongst others. The ducks quite took to us and kept coming up to peck at our shoes and bags. They were so tame that they even dozed off sat right next to us! In the photo above you can see Dave and Daphne our new pet ducks!
